Hale Civic Society is planning to demolish the millennium mosaic on Ashley Road after recognising that it is being used as a “public urinal”.
The mosaic, which was commissioned by Hale Millennium Partnership and features references to Hale’s past and present, has also been vandalised by people picking off the tiles.
Denise Laver, chairman of the Hale Civic Society, said: “After they came to build it, it became the public urinal, and since then the kids have destroyed it. The mosaic is irreparable and as a consequence we need to demolish it.”

Other members of the Hale Civic Society suggested that its location was what caused it to be used as a “public urinal”.
The mosaic was originally intended to be placed on the floor so that children could interact with it, but Trafford Council insisted that it should be facing a road.
Laver added: “We paid £10,000 to have the mosaic done and Trafford Council designed the plinth and they let us down.
“All the local councillors wanted us to save the mosaic but I thought that there was no way of doing it. One idea we’ve had is that the mosaic could be incorporated into the new library building.”

Despite the plans for demolition, Hale Civic Society members are looking for a way to save the tiles – but they must first decide on a method of demolition and get permission from the council.
There is no set date for the removal of the piece as the society is currently in the process of assessing the costs of demolition.
