Stelios Shengas, the owner of Suma Fitness, based across the road from the accident, said: “I heard a bang and then went outside to see what had happened and noticed that the driver in the car was having some sort of fit.

“I tried to open the doors of the car but they were locked so I got a sledgehammer from my gym and smashed the back seat window.

“I did not know at that time that there was a baby boy in the back of the car and it was very lucky that I smashed the window on the opposite side from where he was. My first instinct was to grab the baby and get it out of the car.”

The wife of the driver soon came to the scene to take care of the baby and an ambulance arrived the take the driver to hospital.

The tenant living above Suma Fitness went to the crashed car and pulled the keys out of the ignition.

There’s no update as yet as to the condition of the man who was at the wheel of the BMW.
