A new craft ale bar is to launch in Altrincham town centre next week on the site of the former Classroom bar.

The Cheshire Tap, which is looking to open on Thursday 17th December, will create 10 new jobs.

The Railway Street site, which backs on to King’s Court, is currently undergoing a complete renovation. It’s another new addition to the Altrincham bar scene – a separate craft ale bar, The Craftsman, is launching on Stamford New Road before Christmas.

General manager Martin Connolly told us the bar would have a “vintage, industrial” look and would have a “bit more edge, a bit more Northern Quarter” than other bars in Altrincham. He previously ran restaurant and cocktail bar Apotheca in the Northern Quarter.

He said the bar would have a large selection of keg and cask ales but that it was hoping to attract a mixed crowd of all ages.

“With a Tap you predominantly think of a male crowd, but the cocktails will be done really well and the wine selection will be good – and of course there will be Prosecco.

“Location-wise, we’re roughly midway between the market and Goose Green, so hopefully we can pull a few from both and create our own.”

Involved in the new bar is Paul Dey, who owns much of the King’s Court development including the King’s Cafe.

He said: “King’s Court hasn’t reached its full potential yet – this bar is just the start. King’s Cafe has put some life back in the square, which previously was dead. All the offices above are totally full now.

“The main thing (about The Cheshire Tap) is to be honest and to do it good. It won’t be dear, and hopefully we’ll get a nice mix of people.”

The Classroom had been a fixture on Altrincham’s bar scene for 10 years before closing in May.
