Hale Barns resident Lillian turns 104 – and puts longevity down to “determination and dark chocolate”

One of Altrincham’s oldest residents, Lillian Barrow, has celebrated her 104th birthday.

One of Altrincham’s oldest residents, Lillian Barrow, has celebrated her 104th birthday.

Lillian, who was born in Sale two years before the First World War began, drank champagne with her family, carers and friends at Sunrise Senior Living in Hale Barns.

The celebrations also included a surprise hamper from Booths supermarket – last year, Lillian was on hand to officially open the Hale Barns store.

Before moving to Sunrise, where she has lived for two and a half years, Lillian worked as a secretary and she and her husband enjoyed a long career with Shell, during which time she travelled to the likes of Trinidad and Borneo. She was also an outstanding bridge player.

Lillian has five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, who, like the staff at Sunrise, are all extremely fond of her. Asked about the secret to her longevity, Lillian advised “determination and dark chocolate!”

Lorraine Fitzpatrick, Sunrise of Hale Barns’ director of community relations, said: “Lillian is a wonderful resident and she a delight to be around. She looks amazing for 104 and has had such a fascinating life! We all greatly enjoyed celebrating another birthday with her at Sunrise last week.”
