Staff and 1,400 students at Wellington School are set to take on their annual sponsored 10-mile walk around Altrincham and Timperley on Friday to raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust.
Mancunian boxer and current World Boxing Association lightweight champion, Anthony Crolla, will be saying a few motivational words to the walkers and their supporters before starting off the walk. He is a longstanding supporter of Teenage Cancer Trust’s work in the North West.
This year, all members of the School Council chose to support Teenage Cancer Trust, and the school is aiming to raise a whopping £40,000. This follows the first-hand experiences of Year 13 student, Laura, who was diagnosed with cancer and is currently undergoing treatment and receiving support from Teenage Cancer Trust.
To motivate their fundraising efforts, the Wellington School students have been learning about the work of their chosen charity. Laura told all the pupils about her experiences of cancer at such a young age and the support she received, while representatives of the charity, including a fundraiser, a Youth Support Worker and the Teenage Cancer Trust Lead Nurse for the North West, have spoken to every year group.
Now in its 19th year, the annual sponsored walk is the biggest charity fundraising event in Wellington School’s calendar and has raised over £300,000 for a variety of charities over the years. Last year, the sponsored walk raised over £37,000 from the single event and the students and staff are hoping to take the total even further this year.
Sabina Ruta, Teenage Cancer Trust Regional Fundraiser, said: “It’s a fantastic event and the staff and students from the school are all so enthusiastic and passionate about supporting Teenage Cancer Trust and learning more about the work we do. A huge thank you to everyone involved in the event and especially deputy head, Liz Copeland, for making it happen.”
Deputy head teacher, Liz Copeland, added: “We’re all so pleased to get behind the charity that supported Laura, my hero, from Year 13. We are really excited that Anthony Crolla has kindly agreed to start the race, which should really spur us on. Our target is an ambitious £40,000. Come on Wellington I know we can do it!!”
