Police are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage after a young woman was left with “life-threatening” injuries in a collision with a car on Manchester Road in Altrincham last evening.
There’s no further update on the condition of the woman – initially thought to be a teenager, but now confirmed as 25 years old – who suffered serious head injuries in the incident involving a black Vauxhall Astra.
She is also understood to have suffered a cardiac arrest at the scene and paramedics were seen giving CPR on the pavement.
Officers, who were at the scene for a number of hours last night with the main A56 road closed around the junction with Park Road, are now appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage to establish exactly what happened.
Police Constable Paul Hailwood of the GMP Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “First of all, our thoughts are with the woman and her family, we have specially trained officers supporting them.
“We are still establishing exactly what happened with this collision and we are keen to speak any witnesses to the collision or any persons who may have footage from dash-cams.”
Anybody with information should call the Greater Manchester Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741, 101 or via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Police will no doubt be considering whether the ongoing work to widen the road – which has led to the controversial decision to introduce a one-lane system for Altrincham-bound traffic – played any part in the incident.
Amey, the company in charge of the £2m road-widening project on Manchester Road, had in March apologised for the “frustrations” resulting from a new on-lane system put in place while the work was carried out. At the time they said the work would be completed in July.
People have taken to social media to express their disgust at the chaos caused by the ongoing work.
Commenting on the Altrincham Today Facebook page, Richard Eades said: “It was only a matter of time before something terrible happened at that junction. A combination of terrible planning, an idiotic road layout and brainless drivers trying to push in, have made it incredibly dangerous. It needs a camera on that junction NOW and someone to pull their finger out and make completing the works a priority.”
Kev Winkley said: “With those clowns doing the roadworks and lane closures, I’m surprised it’s taken this long before there was a serious accident there.”
Peter Ruether described the incident as “so tragic, but also so predictable”, adding that Trafford Council’s handling of the work had been “appalling”.
Rachel Stratton said: “The roadworks there and the idiotic one lane system makes navigating lanes difficult and confusing. This needs to be remedied asap.” Lynne Travis added that it had been “just been a matter of time before there was going to be a serious incident… this road improvement was NOT thought out.”
We have approached Amey for a comment.
