Altrincham-bound motorists are set for more disruption from Monday, with the four-month closure of the eastbound exit slip road of the M56 junction 7.
The closure, to start at 2am on Monday July 11th, will affect traffic travelling towards Manchester from the Wirral/Cheshire area.
Eastbound drivers looking to turn off at the Bowdon roundabout will have to continue on to Hale Barns at junction 6.
The closure is to allow for the complete remodelling of the junction in what is the latest phase of the project, which will cost anything up to £221m.
Once completed, the new layout will give drivers direct ‘free flow’ access between the A556 and M56 and vice versa, without having to negotiate a roundabout or traffic lights.
Highways England says it will “significantly reduce traffic around the current Bowdon roundabout” and improve local travel times.
The entire project will create an improved 4.5 mile modern dual carriageway between Knutsford and Bowdon, and will also make the existing A556 into a single carriageway road with facilities for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders.
