Timperley man gets World War Two medals 70 years late – and celebrates on his 100th birthday

A Timperley resident has received his World War Two medals over 70 years late – on his 100th birthday.

A Timperley resident has received his World War Two medals over 70 years late – and celebrated on his 100th birthday.

Trafford Housing Trust threw a special party for Orchard Court resident Victor Goulden to mark both special occasions.

Victor, who was born in Bowdon Vale, was honoured for his service in World War Two but like many who fought in that conflict, had to apply for his medals.

Finding this not to be appropriate, Victor chose not to apply – but his son applied on his behalf this year and he’s now in full possession of the set of medals that his service deserved.

The party was attended by fellow residents at Orchard Court, as well as staff and members of Victor’s family.

Victor said: ”I do not think it sunk in at first that I was turning 100, it was only after the party when I sat down and I started to go through my life and think about different stages from being a baby and to realise what I had gone through – good and bad. I am proud of myself and my family.

“What I enjoyed most about the occasion was seeing so many people there and having all my family together at once. I really enjoyed the whole day.”

Regarding his war medals, Victor added: “I felt very satisfied receiving my war medals and wish that I had sent for them before now. I do feel a little annoyed at myself!”

Beverly Cannon, scheme manager at Orchard Court, added: “I have been a scheme manager for 15 years now and love my job, especially on occasions like this.

“Today could not have been for a better person as Victor is a lovely man. He is very thoughtful and cares about people, especially his family and his friends at Orchard Court. I love listening to his stories of the war and his family life when he was a child.”
