The roadworks that have caused major disruption on Stamford New Road are finally set to finish in April – but not before a two-way closure of the road lasting almost three months.
The public realm improvements programme on one of the town’s main arteries, which originally began last May, are now scheduled to finish on April 28th.
That’s a month longer than Trafford Council originally suggested back in September – and several months longer than originally planned when the work began.
And from this Sunday, February 5th, drivers face more disruption when the road will be closed to traffic in both directions between the Regent Road and Cross Street junctions while the resurfacing of the road is carried out.
Access for pedestrians will remain unaffected and the businesses within the affected area will remain open.
The council told us last September that contractor J Cooney Ltd had encountered “unforeseen” issues during the project.
The Stamford New Road work is the next phase of a £6m programme of improvements to public realm space in Altrincham town centre.
The improvements involve the implementation of a new street layout, to include the widening of footpaths, decluttering of existing furniture and planting of new tress.
The work follow a first phase of work that was completed towards the end of 2015.
That work focused on Shaw’s Road, Cross Street, their intersection with George Street, and the area in front of the transport interchange on Stamford New Road.
