Pupils and teachers from schools across Altrincham dressed up to mark World Book Day yesterday.
Broadheath Primary School held a whole school assembly and tested the pupil’s knowledge with a book quiz.
Hermione (Mrs Thomason) and Mog the Cat (Mrs Birch) had a tricky job to pick only four winners from all the amazing costumes, each of them receiving a book as their prize.
The winners (above) were: Mack (EYFS), Kai (Key Stage 1, Ava (Lower Juniors) and Lois (Upper Juniors).
At Loreto Grammar School, hundreds of Willy Wonkas, Matildas, Big Friendly Giants and Oompa Loompas could be seen in the classrooms and corridors as the English Department chose to celebrate last year’s Roald Dahl Centenary.
Loreto Grammar School English teacher Ruth Daly, who organised the event, said: “We want to develop a passion for literature, making sure girls realise that English isn’t just about passing an exam but about a life long love and enthusiasm for the written word and the different horizons it can open up throughout their lives.”
Ruth added: “We don’t just dress up: staff post their own favourite books on notice boards around the school and we run a range of competitions and quizzes so every girl from Year 7 to 13 gets involved.”
Megan Gilliver, 11, from Sale, who dressed up as Mary Poppins, said: “I love books with a sense of adventure where you just have to turn the next page.”
And over at St Ambrose College in Hale Barns, teachers set the example as they told boys about their current literary loves.
Head of English, Maxine Hill, said: “Reading stimulates the imagination and creativity, developing empathy and improving writing skills and it’s also great fun. Sometimes we forget that.
“At St Ambrose we’ve been giving ‘extreme reading’ a go. Staff and pupils have been taking pictures of themselves reading in some unusual places: the gym, the all-weather pitch and even the swimming pool. It’s got us all talking about what we’re reading at the moment and given us some great ideas about what to read next.”
