Everyman is planning to open a cinema in the former JJB Sports unit in Altrincham town centre.
The boutique cinema chain, which has 22 venues across England, is working up proposals ahead of submitting a planning application to Trafford Council for a four-screen cinema in the currently vacant unit at 74-88 George Street.
The proposed cinema would be accessible both from New Market Square and George Street, and would be the second cinema in Altrincham after Vue on Denmark Street.
Earlier this week, Everyman revealed that it had exchanged contracts on an unspecified Altrincham site earmarked for a four-screen cinema that it hoped to open in 2018.
Chief executive Crispin Lilly said: “We’re so excited to create something special in Altrincham. Our focus is really on experience, from a fabulous bar and food and drink menu, including lovely wines and hand rolled pizzas, to comfy sofa seating and a great programme of film and events.
“We aim to make every guest’s visit special no matter what they choose to watch, and make them fall in love with a night at the cinema.”
David Hopps, executive member for housing and strategic planning at Trafford Council, said: “We’re excited to be welcoming Everyman to Trafford. They promise to offer an experience that is very different and will hopefully appeal to regular moviegoers, as well as people who don’t normally visit the cinema.”
The redevelopment of 74-84 George Street is being undertaken by Merepark on behalf of Altrincham Regeneration. Two additional retail/leisure units, spanning 4,000 sq ft and 5,000 sq ft, are also available for letting.
The news would represent a significant boost for the southern end of George Street after a spate of big-name arrivals at the other end, including Flannels, Bistrot Pierre, Paperchase and JD Sports.
