Altrincham Grammar School for Boys (AGSB) is the number one school in Greater Manchester for Attainment 8 scores.

The new ranking follows this year’s GCSE results and “cements the school’s position” as one of the best performing state-funded schools in the country.

Attainment 8 is an average score across eight subjects taken at GCSE, including English, maths and a range of other subjects.

AGSB got an average Attainment 8 score of 78.5 points per pupil after their 2018 GCSE results, compared to the national average of 46.4.

Graeme Wright, the new Head Master of AGSB, said the school’s excellent results were down to a number of factors.

Mr Wright, an ex-Royal Marine, said: “Pupils were well behaved and motivated with a strong desire to succeed individually and collectively.

“Another factor is the ability to recruit and retain an outstanding body of specialist teaching staff who have worked extremely hard to prepare both themselves and the students for the changes in the structure of GCSEs.”

This year, the grading structure of GCSE exams changed from the traditional A*,A,B,C to a numerical system where the grades range from nine, the highest, to one, the lowest.

Other changes include more essay-style questions in exams and the removal of coursework or controlled assessment from most subjects, apart from practical ones such as art, dance and drama.

AGSB says it encourages students to be active outside the classroom as well, and some students compete in a sport at an international level or perform at National music competitions.
