One of Altrincham’s oldest pubs looks set to be converted into residential housing.
An application has been lodged by Kkumann Capital Ltd to convert The Wheatsheaf, on Church Street, into a total of seven homes.
The distinctive black and white timber pub, which has been vacant for over two years, is thought to date to around the 1770s, shortly after the turnpike road was built in 1765.
Howard & Seddon Architects has now designed a scheme for the conversion of the pub into four three-bed and three two-bed houses.
The Wheatsheaf is part of the Sandiway Conservation Area and is clad in a decorative timber framing, and retains its historic carriage entrance.
The building, which is considered a heritage asset, will not be completely demolished as part of the proposed plans, however.
The main part of the old pub facing on to Church Street – including the timber panel and render infill facade – will be retained, and a proposed new gable fronting would be finished with timber paneling.
A heritage report prepared for the applicant by Jenny Wetton Conservation has found that the proposals were “considered to be consistent with the identified heritage values of the
Conservation Area” and to be “beneficial overall”.
A decision on the proposal by Trafford Council is expected in April.
