Altrincham’s Household Waste Recycling Centre could be reopening within the next two weeks.
At an emergency meeting of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), which owns all 20 centres within Greater Manchester, it was agreed by all nine local councils that “some” of the centres will be reopening within the next fortnight.
Confirmation of whether the Altrincham centre off Sinderland Road is among those to reopen will be announced “in due course”, and will be based on available staff resources and subject to the agreement of traffic management plans with district councils.
But given that Altrincham is one of the main centres in the south of the region, it’s likely that bosses will be extremely keen to make sure it is one of those reopened.
A statement from the GMCA said that reopening will “need to be done in a careful and planned way, with involvement from Greater Manchester Police“.
All local centres were closed with immediate effect on March 24th in the wake of the government-led lockdown to stem the coronavirus outbreak.
Earlier this week Cllr Nathan Evans, Trafford Conservative Group Leader, said that the centres were “essential” and called for the centres in Altrincham and Stretford to be reopened in order to reduce the amount of fly-tipping that had resulted from their closure.
“Recycling centres are essential and the decision to close should be reviewed immediately,” he said. “Social distancing should be adopted and the operation run safely, both for those who work and those accessing the service.”
