The family of Yousef Makki say they are looking forward to “some desperately needed answers” after a coroner today agreed to their request for a full inquest into the teenager’s death.
Yousef died after being stabbed with a flick knife by Joshua Molnar in Hale Barns in March 2019.
Molnar was cleared of murder and manslaughter after the jury accepted that he acted in self-defence, and in February he was released from a Young Offenders’ Institute only 215 days into a 16-month sentence.
Last month, a police watchdog dropped a probe into Greater Manchester Police’s handling of the investigation.
But Yousef’s family have today received confirmation from Stockport Coroner’s Court that the coroner has decided to grant a full inquest into the 17-year-old Manchester Grammar School student’s death.
The news comes less than a month after Debbie Makki, Yousef’s mother, died at the age of just 55.
In a statement, the family said: “We are grateful to the Coroner for resuming the inquest into Yousef’s death.
“My mum was anxious for an inquest to take place in order to bring some closure and we are deeply saddened that she was not there to hear today’s decision.
“We remember and mourn both her and Yousef today, and we look forward to the inquest bringing us some desperately needed answers.”
A coroner’s inquest will hear from witnesses and consider other evidence, such as post-mortem or expert reports, in an attempt to establish the facts of a death. The coroner cannot find anyone criminally responsible for a death.
The inquest is scheduled to take place in March 2021.
