The Trafford 11+ is changing - and for many local families, that brings uncertainty. Here, Chloe Green, founder of Altrincham tuition centre Green Tuition, explains what the changes mean in practice and why strong foundations matter more than ever.
For a long time, preparation for the 11+ centred heavily around Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning. While those skills undoubtedly have their place, the new Trafford assessment places much greater emphasis on the core academic skills children use every day in school – mathematical reasoning, reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar and creative writing.
Any significant change to such an important examination naturally brings uncertainty. Parents want reassurance that their child is preparing in the right way and that the tuition they choose reflects the new assessment.
At Green Tuition, we've been looking at these changes very carefully. And, if we're honest, we're genuinely excited by them.
Why? Because first and foremost, we are teachers.
Every member of our teaching team is fully qualified, with real classroom experience. Our job has never been simply to teach children how to answer a particular style of exam question. Our job is to develop confident mathematicians, capable readers, thoughtful writers and resilient learners.
We've always believed that the best 11+ results come from exceptional teaching, secure foundations and a genuine understanding of the curriculum – not shortcuts or memorised question types.
Preparing children for the Trafford 11+ remains our priority and we continue to have high expectations for every pupil who walks through our doors. Our role is to combine those expectations with expert teaching, careful planning and an environment where children feel confident enough to ask questions, make mistakes and keep improving.
Every child is different. Some arrive already loving maths. Others are reluctant writers. Some need to build confidence before they can truly demonstrate what they're capable of. Our responsibility is to understand each child as an individual and help them make the greatest progress possible throughout their Year 5 journey.
As more information about the new Trafford assessment is released, we will continue to ensure our programme reflects the format and expectations of the examination.

One thing, however, won't change – our commitment to outstanding teaching. Because while examinations evolve, the principles of great education remain the same: strong foundations and confident children.
We believe those are the ingredients that give every child the very best opportunity to succeed – not only in the Trafford 11+, but throughout their education.
If your child is starting their 11+ journey this September, we'd be delighted to be part of it.
