Bridget Garner, former landlady of the Railway pub and a much-loved pillar of the Hale village community, has died at the age of 74.
Bridget died peacefully at home in Bowdon on Sunday October 10th after a battle with cancer.
Originally from County Mayo in Ireland, Bridget was landlady of the Railway in Hale from 1984 to 2007, when she handed over reins of the Ashley Road pub to her son Alan.
She was a well-known face across the village and a proud charity fund-raiser and supporter of numerous local initiatives.
Denise Laver, of Hale Civic Society, said: “Bridget was a most fearless and determined character with a heart of gold. She was such a kind and fun-loving character who will be missed by many. The civic society is indebted to her vibrancy and support and her legacy will live on throughout the community.”
The funeral is taking place at 12.15 this Tuesday, October 19th, at St Vincent’s Church in Altrincham. Afterwards there will be a celebration of Bridget’s life at the Railway.
Alan Hough, Bridget’s son, said: “Whilst we are extremely sad at the passing of our dear Mum we have taken great strength in the kind, heartfelt messages of support we have received from the local community as well as further afield.
“The volume of messages is an indication of the amount of lives she has touched and makes us even more proud of her at this difficult time for us all.”
Bridget leaves a husband, Norman, sons Ian and Alan and several grandchildren.
