St Ambrose College has paid tribute to Liam O’Connor, an “exceptionally talented, kind and gentle” former pupil who was killed after being hit by a car on Saturday.
Liam, 20, died after being struck by a silver Peugeot 308 at about 1.40am in Jesmond, Newcastle, where he had just completed his second year studying maths and finance at Newcastle University.
In a statement, St Ambrose said Liam had attended the school from 2014 until 2021, a following in the footsteps of older brother Sean.
“He enriched our college community beyond measure and was an exceptionally talented, kind and gentle young man. We are immensely proud that Liam was and always will be an Ambrosian,” the school said.
“A huge part of Liam’s journey at the college was his love for sport. He excelled in many sports as evidenced through him holding the all-time school records for year 9 and 10 hurdles and the Victor Ludorum trophy as best athlete, but it was his love and passion for rugby that was undeniable.
“Liam made his debut for the First XV when only in year 11, he was a stand-out member of the team throughout his time in Sixth Form as well as on the rugby tours to South America and Ireland where he was presented with the Man of the Match award. Liam’s rugby success continued outside of school where he represented Lancashire at every age group before moving to Sale Sharks.”
Premiership club Sale Sharks said Liam had been a “consistent match winner”.
It said: “Every one of [his] teams had a true star and warrior in their team.
“Liam epitomised the spirit of rugby union and always made his parents and team-mates proud of his achievements.
“Everyone at Sale Sharks is completely heartbroken and our thoughts turn to Liam’s family.”
St Ambrose added: “We share our deepest condolences to Liam’s family and all his friends. We feel privileged to have shared part of Liam’s life and he will always remain in our hearts and minds.”
