Broadheath homes evacuated after discovery of wartime shells

Police say they were called just after noon today.

A Broadheath street cordoned off this afternoon

Residents have been evacuated from a number of homes in Broadheath this afternoon after the discovery of what are thought to be old war shells at a property.

Dozens of properties have been impacted in a 100-metre exclusion zone surrounding the house on Avocet Drive.

Police say they were called just after noon to reports of suspicous items during a house clearance.

The items have been subsequently revealed to be old wartime gun shells, and the bomb squad has been called to make the area safe.

The MEN is reporting that the house belonged to a former weapons expert who was in the military for 30 years.

It adds that a controlled explosion may be required in the back garden of the house.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "Shortly after midday today (2 November), officers were called to reports of suspicious items found during a property clearance on Avocet Drive, Altrincham. EOD are en-route to assess the items, and a precautionary cordon has been put in place."
