Breaking: Police recover body from Bridgewater Canal in Altrincham

There was a huge emergency response this morning.

A body has been recovered from the Bridgewater Canal in Altrincham following a major emergency response this morning.

Police were called to Atlantic Street shortly before 8.30am after a member of the public reported seeing a body in the water.

Emergency services, including Greater Manchester Police, ambulance crews and fire services, rushed to the scene near the canal towpath.

The body of a female was recovered from the canal, though her identity has not yet been established.

Officers are now working urgently to identify the deceased and inform her family, while also investigating the circumstances that led to her death.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “Shortly before 8.30am on Wednesday 10 December 2025, officers were called to Atlantic Street, Altrincham to reports of a body in the water.

“Emergency services attended and sadly the body of a female has been recovered from the water.

“Officers are currently working to establish her identity to inform and support her loved ones, and the circumstances surrounding her death.”
