Call for action after second Broadheath scrapyard fire in a year

The blaze broke out at around 2.40pm.

A local councillor has called on Trafford Council to take action following a second major fire at an Altrincham scrapyard in less than a year.

Fire crews were called to the J Davidson scrapyard on Sunday afternoon after flames broke out at approximately 2.40pm, sending plumes of black smoke rising above the area near Altrincham Retail Park.

Plumes of black smoke billow from the J Davidson fire in Broadheath this afternoon

No injuries have been reported, but the incident marks the second significant blaze at the scrapyard since March last year, when a large fire destroyed numerous vehicles on the site.

Councillor Ulrich Savary expressed the growing frustration of local residents in a social media post following the latest fire.

"It is now the second time in less than 12 months that residents have had to endure a fire at Davidson," Cllr Savary said.

The fire was located very close to Altrincham Retail Park

"While we do not yet know the cause of this fire, and I sincerely hope that no one has been injured, residents living nearby are understandably concerned about the business and want the council to act."

The councillor revealed he has previously contacted Trafford Council on multiple occasions requesting they engage with the scrapyard's owners, and vowed to do so again on Monday.

The site has been the focus of safety concerns in recent months. In September, a man in his 40s died at the scrapyard, prompting an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive.

As of Sunday evening, fire crews remained at the scene with road closures still in place around the site, which is located adjacent to Altrincham Retail Park.
