One of Hale village's longest-standing independent retailers has shut its doors for the last time.
Costellos has announced it closed permanently on Thursday 24th April, bringing to an end more than half a century of family-run electrical expertise in the local community.
A notice placed in the window broke the news to customers: "It's with a heavy heart that Costellos Contracting and the shop will close permanently today 24th April 2026.
"After over 50 wonderful years, it has been a very difficult decision. We want to express our deepest gratitude for your loyalty, support and friendship throughout those years."
The business was founded in Sale in 1972 by James Costello and his wife Barbara. A decade later, in 1982, the couple relocated to Hale, where the shop became a fixture of the village for generations of residents.
When James and Barbara retired in 2004, the business was sold, before Simon Peters and his wife Dianne - who had run their own successful electrical firm - purchased Costellos in October 2007. Simon had previously worked there himself between 1984 and 1988.
Alongside the shop, Costellos ran a contracting business to customers across Manchester and Cheshire. Services ranged from domestic rewiring and specialist lighting installations to fire and intruder alarm systems and commercial electrical work.
The shop floor stocked an Aladdin's Cave of electrical products, from vacuum cleaners to a wide range of specialist lamps.
Graham Bailey had run the retail side and repaired vacuum cleaners and small domestic appliances since the 1980s.
Customers were quick to express their sadness at the shop's closure.
Commenting on Facebook, David Smith said: "Really sad news, Graham has always provided incredible service to me, and my Dad before me. Another reason for less footfall in our once amazing village. Good luck for the future Graham and team if reading this. You'll be missed!!!"
Nuala Kennedy added: "It’s a terrible loss for Hale Village and all their customers, I have used this shop regularly for years. They always had that elusive light bulb and kept my hoover going for years!! They had the most helpful staff, they were brilliant!"
