Thousands of people lined the streets of Altrincham yesterday as a record-breaking 36,000 runners took part in the Manchester Marathon.
The adidas Manchester Marathon 2025 coincided with the London Marathon for the first time ever, creating the largest day of marathon running in UK history with a combined 90,000 participants across both events.
Over 140,000 spectators lined the sun-kissed 26.2-mile route throughout Greater Manchester, with residents once again turning out in significant numbers for the Altrincham and Timperley parts of the race.

The elite men's race was won by Josh Griffiths in an impressive time of 02:16:56, while Tessa McCormick claimed the women's title with a remarkable 02:34:53. Incredibly, Olivia Tsim secured second place in the women's race just seven months after giving birth.
This year's event attracted many first-time marathon runners, with over 50% of participants tackling the 26.2-mile distance for the first time.
Among the diverse field were 87-year-old Harry Newton from Macclesfield – the event's oldest participant – and Kelsey Sheridan from Greater Manchester, who completed the course alongside her assistance dog Hamble after overcoming seven years of being wheelchair-bound due to CFS/ME.

The marathon also set new fundraising records, surpassing last year's total of £3.5 million raised for various charities, including official partners The Alzheimer's Society, The British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK and The Christie Charity.
Andrew Smith, CEO of event organisers A.S.O. UK, said: "The day was nothing short of spectacular. Manchester has shown once again why it’s one of the best cities to take on a marathon – welcoming, passionate and full of heart.

"To see 36,000 people cross the finish line, many for the very first time, on the UK’s biggest-ever day of marathon running, is incredibly special. We’re proud to celebrate this moment with the whole community – participants, volunteers, charities and supporters – who made this event so successful."
The adidas Manchester Marathon will return on Sunday 19th April 2026, with priority registration opening tomorrow.
