Altrincham Christmas Lights Switch-On draws record crowds

Organisers say visitor numbers rose by 36.7%.

Altrincham's Christmas Lights Switch-On attracted record crowds on Saturday, with footfall up by more than a third compared to last year's event.

Organisers say visitor numbers rose by 36.7% on the equivalent event in 2024, as thousands packed George Street for the Neon Noel-themed celebration.

Coronation Street star Sam Aston, who plays Chesney Brown in the long-running soap and recently won Dancing on Ice, was on hand to help switch on the lights and officially kick off the festive season.

The afternoon featured a packed programme of entertainment hosted by Darren Proctor from Happy Radio, with performances from Little Belters, the Music Place Choir, and appearances from children's favourites Bluey and Stitch.

Luzahnn from 90s dance act Livin' Joy brought the event to an energetic finale, performing dancefloor anthems including Freed From Desire and their number one hit Dreamer.

Mandy White, Altrincham BID Director, said the turnout reflected continued investment in expanding the event each year.

"We're delighted with the success of this year's event," she said. "The strong turnout, the fantastic atmosphere, and the incredible level of publicity all highlight the positive impact the Christmas Lights Switch-On has for the town.

"The uplift in footfall was also welcomed by local businesses, many of whom reported a noticeable boost in trade throughout the day."

The Christmas events programme will continue with the Lantern Parade and Nativity Journey on Saturday 13th December.
