The Altrincham line has reopened after Metrolink engineers repaired the damage that had forced much of the network to grind to a halt today.
Engineers worked through the night and morning to fix the overhead lines – the equipment that is used to power the trams – and will now be carrying out assessments to understand the cause of the fault.
Power has now been restored to all parts of the network and trams have carried out successful test journeys.
Transport for Greater Manchester says that services are now starting to return to the Altrincham and East Didsbury lines, which had been fully suspended since last evening.
They say however that some delays will remain until a full service is restored and tickets will still be accepted on the 11, 23, 245, 255, 256 and 263 bus services.
Alex Cropper, Head of Operations at TfGM, said: “I would like to reiterate our apologies to everyone whose journeys were affected by the issues on Metrolink, both last night and today.
“Engineers have successfully repaired the damage to overhead lines after working throughout the night and morning, but some delays are expected while the operator returns a full service on the lines.
“I’d like to once again thank passengers for their patience and understanding and would encourage people to visit the TfGM website or Metrolink Twitter feed for the latest travel information.”
