Altrincham commuters face August disruption as key junctions close

It's part of a scheme designed to make journeys safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

The Barrington Road junction on Manchester Road is affected

Two key Altrincham junctions will be closed for a number of weeks from early August as part of an ambitious new active travel scheme designed to make journeys safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

The junctions at Sinderland Road and Barrington Road along the busy A56 Manchester Road will be temporarily closed from August 4th until late August, with lane closures continuing until late September as Trafford Council and Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) deliver safety improvements.

The works form part of the Sale West to Altrincham Network Improvements programme (SWANI), a Quality Bus Transit scheme aimed at making bus travel more attractive and accessible between Sale West and North Altrincham.

The improvements will see new signal-controlled pedestrian crossings installed at all arms of both junctions, specifically designed to be accessible for users with visual or mobility impairments. The upgrades are part of a broader initiative to encourage active and sustainable travel in the area.

Barrington Road and Sinderland Road will be completely closed at their junctions with Manchester Road from August 4th to August 29th.

The Sinderland Road junction on Manchester Road will also be closed

Manchester Road will see lane closures from August 4th until the project completes in the week beginning September 22nd, though two-way traffic will be maintained throughout.

Final funding and approval for the scheme will be sought at the Bee Network Committee later this month, with signed diversions to be put in place and letters delivered to directly affected residents and businesses closer to the start date.

Cllr Aidan Williams, Trafford Council's Executive Member for Climate Change, said: "Trafford Council is committed to providing active travel schemes and improving safety for all road users. The improvements at the Barrington Road and Sinderland Road junctions are essential and will provide safer crossings and better access to public transport and local amenities while retaining reliable travel for local residents, businesses, and commuters.

"We apologise for the fact that this scheme may cause some disruption in the short-term but we are carrying out the works to improve safety and that is a major priority for us."

Anthony Murden, Deputy Head of Projects Group at TfGM, added: "The Sale West to Altrincham Network Improvements project is set to boost connectivity and promote sustainable travel in Trafford.

"By enhancing bus stops, creating safer routes for walking, wheeling and cycling, and upgrading traffic signals to prioritise buses, the scheme will make public transport journeys more reliable and accessible for people in the Sale West and Altrincham areas.

"This initiative, part of a series of planned improvements, aims to reduce car dependency and congestion, contributing to greener and better connected communities as part of the wider Bee Network."

The junction upgrades represent a critical first step in the SWANI Main Interventions programme, which aims to modernise and improve a key bus corridor in Trafford as part of Greater Manchester's push for safer, greener, and more accessible public transport.

Residents and commuters are advised to plan their journeys in advance and allow extra time during the works period. Emergency service access will be maintained throughout the construction phase.
