Boy, 16, arrested after off-road riders lead police on 90-minute chase from Hale

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested in connection after police were led on a 90-minute chase by youths on off-road bikes.

The incident started in Hale on Saturday afternoon when two youths on off-road bikes were seen riding through red lights on Hale Road.

A helicopter was scrambled by Greater Manchester Police and officers in unmarked cars and a dog unit was deployed.

The chase, during which the riders were actually seen filming the chase, finally came to an end in Alkrington Woods Nature Reserve in Middleton.

A statement from Greater Manchester Police said: “Police were called shortly after 2.10pm on Saturday 31 October to a report of youths on off-road bikes driving through red lights on Hale Road in Hale.

“A Blue Suzuki Motorcycle – believed to have been recently stolen – was located on Washway Road abandoned.

“Officers from GMP’s dedicated operation to off-road bikes were engaged in a pursuit with a second motorbike also believed to be stolen which came to its conclusion in Middleton.

“Officers from the Roads Policing Team and Tactical Vehicle Intercept Unit were assisted by NPAS to detain one of the suspects from the second motorcycle.

“A 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of a number of offences including theft of a motorcycle and dangerous driving. Two bikes were recovered and enquiries are ongoing.”

It’s understood that another youth, believed to be the pillion passenger, got away.

A blue Suzuki bike was recovered during the chase on Washway Road in Sale.
