Altrincham has an abundance of great pubs and bars with an outdoor seating area or terrace.

Here’s our pick of the best:

Rope and Anchor

A family friendly classic in a quiet spot in Dunham Massey, ideal for family meals as well as a quick drink after work.

Why we love it: The Rope and Anchor boasts a large and sunny beer garden that’s perfect to sit and relax in with a pint of your favourite. The pub is based in Dunham Massey in a quiet, isolated area away from the busy high street and close to the Trans Pennine Trail. It’s the perfect stop for anyone out and about enjoying the local area.

What we’re having: For a hearty meal we’re having a grilled sirloin steak served with thick cut chips and garden peas. As well as ales and lager, The Rope and Anchor offer a wide selection of white, rose and red wine.

Where: Paddock Lane, Dunham Massey, Altrincham, WA14 5RP

Axe and Cleaver

A favourite with Altrincham residents, the Axe and Cleaver is a beautiful pub that dates back to 1880. Fresh pub grub made with love and attention to detail.

Why we love it: Traditional pub meals and fantastic customer service is what makes the Axe and Cleaver such a popular pub for locals. Hidden away in the village of Dunham Massey, the Axe and Cleaver caters for every customer whilst keeping a calm, relaxing atmosphere whether it’s indoors or out. The large, south-facing beer garden is surrounded by fields and is a perfect spot for a quiet evening drink or a traditional family Sunday roast.

What we’re having: It’s hard to beat the Axe and Cleaver’s signature fish and chips, washed down with a classic gin and tonic, although Axe and Cleaver isn’t short of choice in the best of British gins. For pudding, sticky toffee pudding served with clotted cream ice cream.

Where: School Lane, Dunham Massey, Cheshire, WA14 4SE

Moss Trooper

A recently refurbished Timperley local offering home-cooked pub classics

Why we love it: Located in Timperley, Moss Trooper is a popular local that was given a £200,000 revamp by owner JW Lees as recently as 2019. The large seating area quickly fills up when the sun’s out and you can keep an eye on the kids as they play across the road in Pickering Lodge Park.

What we’re having: For the perfect pub lunch, The Moss Trooper offers serves home styled bangers and mash with creamy mash and onion gravy followed by a seasonal berry crumble with hot custard. For a drink we’re staying local with Manchester Pale Ale.

Gardeners Arms

Another Timperley pub to have had a recent refurb – this time a £380,000 overhaul in 2019 – this proper, family-friendly local is unrecognisable from its former self.

Why we love it: A stone’s throw from the tram line, this Priory Inns-owned boozer offers a more modern menu without compromising what’s expected of a traditional local pub. The beer garden at the rear is a good sun trap with a small play area for the kids.

What we’re having: We’re going with a gourmet southern fried chicken burger topped with bacon and cheese and served with skin-on fries.

Where: 41 Deansgate Lane, Timperley, Altrincham, WA15 6SQ

The Stamford Arms

One of Altrincham’s old favourites, The Stamford has a beautiful outdoor space in the shadow of Bowdon Church

Why we love it: There are few things to equal a sunny evening on the grassy terrace outside The Stamford Arms – or indeed a long summer afternoon at the weekend. Food-wise, The Stamford has the feeling of a traditional British pub with food reminiscent of a high-end restaurant.

What we’re having: Unique to the pub, we’re going for a spiced cauliflower steak with korma sauce and wild rice. For afters, a house-made Eccles cake and drinking an ice cold pint of Guiness.

Where: The Firs, Bowdon, Altrincham, WA14 2TW

Traders Tiki Bar

One for the younger generation, this quirky venue boasts a sun-trap terrace in Goose Green

Why we love it: A unique Polynesian-style look inside and out, Traders Tiki Bar brings a flare of originality to Goose Green. They also offer cocktail masterclasses and every drink in Traders Tiki Bar is made from the highest quality spirits.

What we’re having: It would be rude to start the night with anything else than the famous Traders Zombie. Then top it off with a refreshing classic; a Pina Colada.

Where: 7-8 Goose Green, Altrincham, WA14 1DW

The Stonemasons Arms

Enormous outdoor space in the heart of Timperley village

Why we love it: The biggest outdoor seating area on the list, the true potential of the Stonemasons was realised when it had a second refurb in two years back in 2018. Aside from a huge lawn, there’s a outdoor pizza over and a large terrace crammed with sturdy seats and tables.

What we’re having: We’ll take one of their good-value Sunday roasts and while away the afternoon in that beer garden…

Riddles

A Speakeasy-style cocktail bar in the heart of Altrincham’s Market Quarter

Why we love it: Probably Altrincham’s best bet for a genuine cocktail made by people who know what they’re doing. The big advantage of this terrace is you’re right in the thick of things Alty-wise, with a nice people-watching view down Greenwood Street towards the bustling market.

What we’re having: A Golden Oldie followed by Eye of the Chairman.

Where: 28 Greenwood St, Altrincham, WA14 1RZ

The Orange Tree

A lively sports bar and pub with open rooms and additional seating outside in one of the oldest parts of Altrincham

Why we love it: Situated in the Old Market Place Conservation Area – where Altrincham’s market had its roots in the 13th century – this part of town has bags of history. From the cobbles outside the Orange Tree, you can sit within yards of a replica of the old stocks once used for punishment in medieval times.

What we’re having: A pint of Sharp’s Doom Bar.

Where: 15 Old Market Pl, Altrincham, WA14 4DE

Costello’s

An ale lover’s palace, situated off the beaten track in Goose Green.

Why we love it: Costello’s takes its beer seriously and is your best bet for locally brewed ales, mainly from the Dunham Massey Brewery. Its sheltered outdoor terrace is a favourite haunt for those in search of a daytime pint.

What we’re having: The selection of beers is constantly evolving but try something local from the Lymm Brewing Co or Dunham Massey Brewing Company.
