Woman rescued from car crushed by falling tree on major road in Altrincham

A woman has been rescued after being trapped inside her car when it was crushed by a large tree on Dunham Road in Altrincham this afternoon. A woman has been rescued after being trapped inside her car when it was crushed by a large tree on Dunham Road in Altrincham this afternoon.

Firefighters work to rescue the woman from the car

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 11.55am, with two fire engines from Altrincham and Sale and two technical response units from Leigh and Ashton-under-Lyne in attendance.

The road was subsequently closed in both directions for two and a half hours while firefighters rescued the woman using cutting gear and specialist equipment before removing the tree and making the area safe.

The tree caused substantial damage to the car

The woman received first aid at the scene from a fire service trauma technician before being transferred to the care of North West Ambulance Service.

There’s no update on her condition yet but Altrincham Today was told by a Greater Manchester Police officer at the scene that it was “not serious”.

The closure caused major congestion of surrounding roads before Dunham Road was reopened at around 2.30pm this afternoon.

A Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “At around 11.55am today (29 January 2022), two fire engines from Altrincham and Sale and two technical response units from Leigh and Ashton-under-Lyne attended a road traffic collision on Dunham Road, Altrincham.

“The collision involved a large tree, which had fallen on the roof of a car. Firefighters rescued one woman using cutting gear and specialist equipment.

“First aid was administered by a fire service trauma technician before the woman was transferred to the care of North West Ambulance Service.

“Crews were in attendance for approximately one hour.

“Strong winds will persist throughout the afternoon, so we advise people to check local weather warnings and to plan journeys accordingly.”
