A Hale author has published the latest in her series of books looking at genealogy and family history.

Ruth Symes, a freelance writer and historian and a frequenter contributor to ancestry magazines including Who Do You Think You Are?, has published a social history of family relationships called Family First: Tracing Relationships in the Past.

The book, published by Pen and Sword Books, is part history and part how-to book.

She said: “Historically, people have reacted differently within families – they’ve not always been the same. My book looks at fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters and babies, and how they have interacted in the family situation over the years.

“There are also tips about family history – for instance, if you have a birth certificate with no father listed, I explain how you can go and find out more. There’s a how-to section in every chapter.”

Symes, who said she “absolutely loves” writing and researching the books, is certainly prolific – she has two more books coming out soon.

One, Stories from Your Family Tree, is actually a reprint and is being retitled Unearthing Family Tree Mysteries.

A further book in February, her ninth in total, is called Researching Family History Through Ancestors’ Personal Writings.
