Altrincham couple among long-serving Cafod volunteers honoured with papal blessing

The couple have volunteered for the Catholic aid agency since 1980.

An Altrincham couple who have dedicated more than four decades to charity work have been awarded a papal blessing in recognition of their extraordinary service.

John and Maureen Mulholland, now aged 93 and 87, have volunteered, fundraised, and campaigned for Cafod - the Catholic aid agency for England and Wales - since 1980.

They are among a group of long-serving volunteers from across the country recognised for more than 25 years of service, and are joined by six fellow members of their parish Cafod group at St Vincent's in Altrincham, which celebrated its 45th anniversary last year.

Volunteers have been honoured for supporting Cafod in a wide range of ways, from campaigning on climate change and debt justice to raising money for those in need overseas and organising community events and Lent and Harvest appeals.

Mr Mulholland said the couple were "surprised, embarrassed, humble and grateful" to learn they were to receive the honour.

"We never dreamt of receiving such an honour… what was achieved in St Vincent's parish was through a group effort, and thanks to the support of successive parish priests and the generosity of parishioners.

"We expected no reward, like others in our close-knit Cafod group, other than knowing that we were providing practical help for some of the poorest in the world and doing so in response to Christ's teaching."

Local Cafod representative Kathryn Keenan presented the award and paid tribute to the couple and their fellow volunteers.

"John and Maureen's support for Cafod, along with all the members of the St Vincent's Cafod group past and present, is truly inspiring. Their decades of dedication to fundraising, campaigning and prayer for Cafod's work, guided by their faith, has impacted countless lives and given hope and practical support to communities overseas.

"I would also like to thank Canon Jonathan Brandon, St Vincent's parish priest and his parishioners for their incredible support and generosity over the years."

Christine Allen, director of Cafod, said the recognition highlighted the vital contribution made by volunteers.

"It's such an honour for anyone to receive Pope Leo's blessing and this highlights the significant role that volunteers play in strengthening communities and building a better world. Our volunteers continue to inspire all of us through their service. Their example reminds us of the importance of working for the common good."
