Steph Smith, who manages the Hale, Altrincham and Sale area for Mums in the Know, chooses five great things to do with the kids over the next week.
1. “Dickinsons Real Deal” at Tatton Park (Saturday 8th November)
If you fancy a bit of fun with the family and perhaps an opportunity to make a little cash before Christmas, take a trip to Tatton Park this Saturday where David Dickinson, the antiques expert, will be filming his TV show Dickinson’s Real Deal.
This is the programme where you can turn up with your unwanted antiques (or car boot sale bargains!) and leave at the end of the day with cash in your pocket. The challenge is how to get the best deal. You can accept the money on offer from the dealer – but you might prefer to take your chance in the auction room.
Entry to this event is free (usual Tatton Park costs apply). There’s no need to book – call 0117 970 618 with any enquiries.
2. BabyCalm Baby Led Weaning Workshop (Saturday 8th November)
If your baby is four to six months, you will be considering the best ways to introduce them to food. Local lady Claire Parrott, from BabyCalm, is running a Baby Led Weaning Workshop on Saturday. This three-hour workshop is designed to introduce parents to the concept of baby led weaning, a method of introducing food to your baby following their lead and cues.
Claire will help you to understand current weaning guidelines and how the idea of babies feeding themselves and having control over their diet can lead to less fussy, healthier eaters which can impact long into adulthood.
Timperley Community Centre, 121 Park Rd, Timperley, WA15 6QQ. 10am-1pm. Contact claireparrott@babycalm.co.uk or call 07989 488 817 to book. £35 per couple.
3. Frozen Sing-a-Long at Altrincham Cinema (Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th November)
Who could resist the opportunity to ‘Let it Go’ in full voice with the kids this weekend! For the uninitiated (is there anyone left who hasn’t heard of Frozen?!), Anna, a fearless adventurer, teams up with Kristoff and his trusty reindeer companion Sven on a snowbound journey to find her sister, Elsa, who has used her magical powers to cast the kingdom of Arendelle into a frozen, year-long winter.
With awesome scenery, huge mystical creatures and a hilarious snowman called Olaf, Frozen is one of the best Disney adventures to date! As a Golden Globe winner and Academy Award and BAFTA nominee, Frozen is returning to the big screen in a sing-a-long addition, featuring all of the lyrics and a magic bouncing snowflake so you can sing-a-long to all your favourite songs!
Showings: 10.30am. Altrincham Cinema, Denmark St, Altrincham, WA14 2WG.
4. FOP Friends Autumn Fair & Family Fun Afternoon (Saturday 8th November)
This fab afternoon promises lots of fun for the family with children’s crafts, stalls, a photographer, games, face painting, a tombola, raffle and more! The event has been arranged by Friends of Oliver and proceeds will go towards finding a cure for FOP (Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva). FOP is a very rare disease of the connective tissue whereby muscles are turned into bone – a healthy mind is locked inside a frozen body. Oliver is a little boy, aged 6, from Sale who is living with this terrible condition. Click here for more details about the event.
St Alban’s Church Hall, Lindsell Rd, Broadheath, WA14 5NX. Times: 2-4pm.
5. Styal Remembers at Quarry Bank Mill (Sunday 9th November)
Quarry Bank has so much to offer families with beautiful gardens, play areas and woods to explore as well as the mill and Apprentice House. This Sunday, there’s the opportunity to discover how Styal memorialised their fallen soldiers after the First World War, and hear oral histories from descendants of the villagers. This is a free event but it’s essential to book in advance as there is limited capacity.
Quarry Bank Mill, Styal, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 4LA. Times: 1-3pm. Contact 01625 445 845 – normal admission charges apply.
