Work has begun on an extension to Dunham Lawn cemetery.
The improvements, which are being carried out by Trafford Council, will provide additional multi-faith burial areas as well as incorporating a new Children’s Garden and new designated sections where members of the Muslim and Jewish faiths can be buried.
The design for the cemetery, which was originally opened in 1963 and sits behind Altrincham Crematorium, will ensure it retains all its rural aspects (such as the trees and landscaping) while introducing some much-needed additional car parking spaces plus new water taps.
It’s estimated the improvements will take around four weeks to complete. All the work will be carried out in a sympathetic manner with due care and respect paid to the existing burial plots.
Cllr Stephen Adshead, Exec Member for Environment, Air quality and Climate Change, said: “This additional land is much needed to ensure we can meet the expectations of Trafford residents, and although it has taken many years to acquire the land we now have sufficient land to meet the needs of the borough for the next 10 years.”
Access to the new section that is being developed at the cemetery is to the right hand side of the site, close to the treed area and the water, so please be aware when visiting that there may be large vehicles coming in and out of this entrance.
