Council cracks down on illegal vape sales

Offenders could face a prison sentence.

Trafford Council is warning retailers and social media sellers in Altrincham that they face prosecution for continuing to sell banned single-use vapes more than a month after they became illegal.

The Government's single-use vape ban came into force on June 1st, but trading standards officers have spotted local shopkeepers and online sellers still offering the products "while stocks last" across the borough.

Officers are now gathering evidence against businesses and individuals who are ignoring the ban, with offenders facing unlimited fines, store closures and even prison sentences - particularly if they're selling to under-18s.

The ban covers all disposable vapes that cannot be refilled or recharged, whether sold in shops or online. It was introduced to reduce environmental harm and tackle the rising number of young people using vapes.

Single-use vapes became illegal on June 1st

Since the ban took effect, Trafford's trading standards team has spoken to more than 70 Trafford businesses to help them understand their legal responsibilities. The council has already secured several successful prosecutions in recent months for selling illegal vapes to minors and for packaging violations.

Councillor Rose Thompson, Trafford Council's Executive Member for Communities and Safety, said the majority of traders have welcomed the law change, but some are choosing to ignore it.

"Our message is, we can see you and we will take action, if you do not cease and desist," she said. "This ties in with our Council priorities to facilitate healthy lives for all, and to address climate change."

The crackdown will intensify further when licensing requirements for all vape and tobacco sellers come into force in 2027.

Residents can report illegal vape sales to the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 0808 223 1133 or online, with lines open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Reports can also be made to Crimestoppers.

Traders seeking guidance can contact Trafford Council through the authority's website.
