Altrincham will host its annual Christmas lantern parade this Saturday when schools, families and locals will come together to light up the town.

Local dance schools and singers will also be performing on the stage in the Stamford Quarter from midday.

Primary schools including Stamford Park Junior School, Navigation Primary School and Altrincham CofE Primary School have been busy preparing lanterns for the parade, which will work its way through the town from 4pm.

Organised by Altrincham Unlimited, the parade will start in Goose Green and finish in Stamford Square around 4.45pm with a Christmas sing-along led by The Music Place.

Those taking part in the parade will start to gather from 3.15pm in Goose Green where a brass ensemble from Aura Music Academy will get everyone in the festive mood with carols.

The parade will include the children from local primary schools, dancers from Cardwell Dance School and skaters from Altrincham Synchro Club, who will be joined by spectacularly illuminated puppets and street performers led by artist Russell Kirk and a samba band.

The group will journey through Moss Lane, Stamford New Road, Regent Road and George Street and will culminate in Stamford Square.

The planned route for the parade

Elizabeth Faulkner, The BID Manager for Altrincham Unlimited, said: “Altrincham’s Lantern Parade really is a magical Christmas experience. It brings many families into the town, involves local primary schools and dance schools and inspires a real sense of community.

“The parade makes its way throughout the town from Goose Green to Stamford Square so make sure you get a good vantage point and arrive early to enjoy the shops, restaurants and bars, plus of course the afternoon entertainment in Stamford Square.”

The parade will end with a sing-along of Christmas songs in Stamford Square

Throughout the day, families who would like to take part in the parade are invited to drop-in to one of the free lantern making workshops at Total Fitness on Denmark Street taking place at 10am-12noon and 1-3pm.

Rolling road closures will be in place, and motorists are advised to avoid the route of the parade between 4-5pm if possible.
