Green light for Altair: Construction of “iconic” apartment building to begin in the summer

Altair, Altrincham’s £70million new residential and leisure quarter in the town centre, is finally going to happen.

Altair, Altrincham’s £70million new residential and leisure quarter in the town centre, is finally going to happen.

Developer Nikal has tonight been granted detailed planning permission for Phase One of Altair by Trafford Council, meaning construction of the 4.5 acre mixed-use scheme will start this summer, with completion of the first phase anticipated in December 2017.

Main contractor, Eric Wright Construction, will commence site clearance works to make way for the construction of an “iconic contemporary style building” that will house 59 high quality apartments plus ground floor retail leisure units.

The apartments will be delivered by Nikal-owned Hillcrest Homes and will comprise 36 one-bedroom and 23 two-bedroom apartments designed by Manchester architects, Stephenson Studio.

The apartments – which will feature a roof terrace, private balconies, German designer kitchens, integrated ‘A’ grade appliances and bathrooms by Villeroy & Boch – will be released for off-plan sales in the summer.

Nikal’s Phase One plans for Altair also include a new entrance for Altrincham Ice Rink and a new landscaped pedestrianised area with space for outside seating and pavement cafés.

Later this year, Nikal says it will submit plans for further phases of construction, to include more homes and contemporary retail spaces suitable for new restaurants, cafés, bars, shops and Grade A office accommodation.

And Altair will be linked directly to the tram, train and bus interchange via a new public bridge.

Nikal managing director, Nick Payne, said: “This is really wonderful news! Altair is such an exciting new addition to our thriving modern market town; a premier town centre living quarter and a real community with high quality but affordable homes where values will appreciate.

“The offering rivals the most fashionable new areas of Manchester, such as Spinningfields and the Northern Quarter. We’re providing stylish and sophisticated apartment living with a fantastic range of desirable amenities and attractions right on the doorstep, plus an excellent choice of transport links that places the whole of the North West within easy reach.

“Even better, we’re also offering the strong community spirit and diverse delights of Altrincham town centre – now firmly established as a hub for original and innovative independent enterprise and one of the very best destinations for ‘foodies’ in the whole of Greater Manchester!

“With all this, it’s no surprise that the level of interest from those looking to move to Altair is strong with a large number of people already registering for more information,” he added.

Outline planning for Altair was granted in 2014 with Nikal working in partnership with Trafford Council.

HOW Planning worked with Nikal on the application process.

Senior planner Jon Power said: “We have worked closely with Nikal to ensure that Altair Phase One delivers an iconic high quality building that reflects its position at a key gateway into both Altrincham and the wider Altair development. This positive decision will act as a catalyst to kick-start the regeneration of Altair and realise significant social and economic benefits at the heart of the town.”
