Christmas events and new openings boost footfall by up to 24% in Altrincham town centre

Good news for retailers and hospitality owners.

Christmas events and the transformation of the Stamford Square area has led to a marked increase in footfall in Altrincham town centre.

Footfall in the Stamford Quarter rose by 16.5% and 23.9% in October and November respectively following the opening of a number of new businesses.

Since the opening of the Foundation building in March, a diverse mix of hospitality and leisure brands have opened including Nell’s Pizza, Lane 7, Starbucks and, last week, independent dim sum kitchen Yum Cha.

LOOKFANTASTIC has also opened its first ever concept store and outdoor retailer Mountain Warehouse has opened its first store in Greater Manchester, with O2 Virgin Media also set to open on George Street before Christmas.

James Tootle, Head of Retail and Leisure at Stamford Quarter co-owner Bruntwood, said: “2024 has been an exceptional year for the Stamford Quarter in terms of visitor numbers, new openings and the opening of the new public realm.

"The neighbourhood is thriving and the increase in visitors numbers is testament to the curated blend of national and independent retailers and hospitality and leisure operators that now call the Stamford Quarter their home."

Meanwhile, Altrincham's Nativity Journey event brought an increase in footfall of 18% compared to the same Saturday last year.

The new event, produced by Altrincham BID in collaboration with St George's Church and Altrincham Garrick Playhouse, saw real-life characters from the Nativity in different locations around the town, as well as stage in Stamford Square with community choirs and solo performances.

This was followed by a nativity themed Lantern Parade and a live nativity performance finale.

Mandy White, Altrincham BID Director, added: "We are delighted that the event was such a success particularly given that we moved elements of the previous week's cancelled Lantern Parade due to the Storm Darragh.

"We're very grateful to everyone from the dedicated volunteers to the talented cast and crew who worked tirelessly to bring the nativity to life."
