Over £100,000 invested in Broomwood community projects

More than £100,000 has been pumped into community projects in Broomwood area of Timperley over the past two years, with residents now able to access a wide range of free and subsidised services.

The investment comes from the L&Q Foundation, the charitable arm of social housing provider L&Q, which has committed £60,000 to a series of wellbeing, youth and community initiatives in the area.

A further £40,000 has been secured from the Greater Manchester Environment Trust for a green spaces project, with L&Q Foundation matching that figure.

The funding has supported free hot drinks and snacks for isolated residents, mental health counselling, Saturday youth sessions, music and wellbeing activities for older people, and a baby bank appeal run by The Little Green Sock Project.

A new Digital Hub at Broomwood Community Centre offers drop-in sessions to help residents build confidence with laptops and smartphones, while a Family Support Hub at Broomwood Primary School provides early-years, SEN and parenting support.

Andy Hodson, Community Centre Manager at Bluesci Support's Broomwood Community Centre, said the funding had allowed them to support people experiencing food poverty, while free tea and coffee had made a real difference for those struggling with isolation.

"Some of the improvements to the community such as the smart TVs, youth room sofas and an extractor fan has allowed people and groups to use the centre more," he added.

One of the headline projects is the 'Greening Broomwood' initiative, which aims to improve six green areas across the estate. So far, 25 fruit and blossom trees and 8,000 spring bulbs have been planted, with wildflower planting, new benches and picnic tables, and better-connected green spaces all in the pipeline.

Local councillor Julian Newgrosh, who helped write the successful funding bid, said the project had already delivered "tangible and sustainable success", including an orchard, a new Friends of Broomwood group, and a community champion stepping forward to lead volunteer efforts.

He paid tribute to L&Q's community development lead Praveen Bance, saying: "I can categorically say that without the support of L&Q, and particularly the incredible work of Praveen Bance, we could not have managed to achieve such an amazing project."

Many of the projects are run through Bluesci Support's Broomwood Community Wellbeing Centre on Mainwood Road, Timperley, WA15 7JU. Residents can drop in at reception, call 07874 895507, or visit broomwood.bluesci.org.uk.
