Firefighters were called to a blaze at a disused former hotel in Timperley on Saturday.
Five fire engines from across Greater Manchester raced to the scene of the fire which had taken hold on the first floor of the former Altrincham Lodge, behind the old Pelican pub.
The incident, which happened shortly before 6pm, led to the closure of Manchester Road while firefighters made the scene safe.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Shortly before 6pm on Saturday 29 April we received the first of several reports of a fire at a disused commercial premises on Manchester Road, Timperley.
“Five fire engines, an aerial platform and a Technical Response Unit from across Greater Manchester were quickly mobilised to the scene, where they found a room on the first floor of the building well alight.
“Crews swiftly devised a plan to tackle the incident and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reels and a covering jet to extinguish the flames and prevent further spread.
“Firefighters carried out checks of the property and surrounding area before departing, and were in attendance for around four hours.”
The site has been unused since the start of lockdown in 2020.
Local construction company New Care (Altrincham) Ltd had proposed to demolish the Pelican Inn and adjoining hotel and replace them with a 75-bed care home and a 22-home apartment block, but the plan was rejected by Trafford Council late last year.
