Health and beauty retailer Superdrug is opening a major new store in Altrincham town centre

It's set to open by early summer.

Superdrug is set to open a new store in Altrincham's Stamford Quarter, taking over the former River Island unit on George Street.

The health and beauty retailer will occupy the 5,431 sq ft space at 44-46 George Street, with the new store expected to open in early summer.

The move comes just weeks after River Island closed the site in January as part of a nationwide restructuring programme.

The arrival of Superdrug will strengthen Stamford Quarter's growing reputation as a beauty and wellness destination in Greater Manchester, offering customers a wide range of cosmetics, skincare, fragrances, toiletries and everyday health essentials, alongside accessible beauty services.

The Stamford Quarter has welcomed a number of new arrivals recently

Recent additions have included luxury health and beauty brand Rituals last year as well as online beauty retailer LOOKFANTASTIC in 2024.

The quarter is also home to established retailers including Holland & Barrett and Boots.

Last year the Stamford Quarter also welcomed new retail openings including Mountain WarehouseCrew Clothing and Oliver Bonas.

The area is also home to leading independent and national hospitality brands including Nell's PizzaYum ChaLane7 and Starbucks.

Chris Houghton, Head of Retail & Leisure at Bruntwood, said: "Superdrug's arrival at Stamford Quarter brings a well-known high street name into a prominent unit on George Street and adds further choice for visitors to the Stamford Quarter.

"Our focus continues to be on maintaining a mix of independents and national brands across health and beauty, fashion, homeware, hospitality and everyday essentials. Superdrug complements that wider offer and supports the continued evolution of the Stamford Quarter as a vibrant part of Altrincham town centre."

Recruitment for the new Altrincham store will begin shortly.

Cllr Liz Patel, Trafford Council's Executive Member for Economy and Regeneration, said: "This is great news for Altrincham. Residents and visitors to the town will be pleased to see another big-name store opening here, as the Stamford Quarter continues to grow and thrive as an established and much-loved shopping and leisure destination."

Superdrug has been experiencing strong growth in recent years, with sales up 7% and profits reaching £136.8m in 2024, its fourth consecutive year of market share gains.

Last year the retailer announced plans to open 25 new stores and refurb 65 existing locations.

Clare Jennings, Property Director at Superdrug, added: "We're excited to be opening a new store at Stamford Quarter in Altrincham, bringing our much loved health and beauty offer to the heart of the town centre. This new location will give even more customers the opportunity to shop with us in person and discover the latest in beauty, skincare, fragrance and everyday health essentials."
