Dunham Massey to mark May Day this Saturday as Rose Queen and Rose Bud crowned

There will be a village procession, crowning ceremony and afternoon of community entertainment.

Dunham Massey will mark May Day in traditional style this year, with a village procession, crowning ceremony and afternoon of community entertainment this Saturday.

Knutsford Academy pupil Bonnie Dalzell, 15, will be crowned Rose Queen 2026 at the Village Hall. A year 10 student with a long history of involvement in May Day, Bonnie has previously taken on the roles of Jack in the Green and Town Cryer. Outside of school, she enjoys rock music and crafts including crochet, embroidery and knitting.

Taking on the role of Rose Bud is seven-year-old Mollie Cormack, a pupil at Oughtrington Primary School who was born in Dunham Massey. Mollie follows in the footsteps of her aunt, who walked the same procession 40 years ago.

A busy and active youngster, Mollie swims, does gymnastics, attends dance classes and running club, and is a member of Brownies. She has been part of May Day since the age of three, progressing through the roles of attendant and sign carrier before this year's honour.

Both Bonnie and Mollie will choose charities to fundraise for in the year following their crowning.

Organiser Sally Potts said: "We are really pleased to have Bonnie and Mollie as our Rose Queen and Rose Bud this year.

"All of the children in our community are encouraged take part in this traditional event that brings the village together and raises vital funds to support the continuance of the Dunham Massey May Day festival, as well as raising funds for small businesses, interest groups and charities that benefit local people.”

This year's theme is 'When I am older, I want to be…', with prizes on offer for the best fancy dress entries in the procession.

The festivities begin with a procession from The Dunham Barn through the village at 1pm, with the crowning ceremony at 2pm, conducted by Councillor Jane Brophy. The afternoon at the Village Hall will include traditional games, face painting, stalls, a fun dog show, Morris dancing, a brass band, raffle, BBQ and pizzas.

Entry is £1 for adults, free for children. For more information, contact Sally Potts on 07920 095753.
