A disused pub and motel in West Timperley have been boarded up and fenced off after a series of fires and trespassers gained entry to the long-empty buildings.
The former Pelican Inn and Altrincham North Lodge on Manchester Road have stood empty since 2020, but Trafford Council has now served a notice on the site's owner - Suffolk-based brewery Greene King - under the Building Act 1984.
That signals its intention to carry out emergency measures, including possible demolition, to make the buildings safe. Greene King is expected to cover the cost of the work.
Most recently, five fire engines were called to the site in April after a blaze broke out on the first floor of the former hotel, the second such fire in three years.
The Old Pelican Inn was designed by renowned local architect George Wescott and the buildings have been fenced off pending expected redevelopment of the site.
Cllr Rose Thompson, Trafford Council's Executive Member for Communities and Safety, said the council was pleased the buildings had been secured.
“We are pleased to see that the Old Pelican Inn and the Altrincham North Lodge have been secured to prevent any further trespassing," she said.
"These are derelict and potentially dangerous buildings, having been closed and unused for several years, and our priority is that people stay away, to avoid risk of injury or worse."
Plans to demolish the pub and hotel and replace them with a 75-bed care home and 22 apartments were rejected by Trafford Council in 2022.
