Steph Smith, who manages the Hale, Altrincham and Sale area for Mums in the Know, chooses five great things to do with the kids over the next week.
1. All the fun of Timperley Country Fair & Craft Show (Saturday September 13th)
This Saturday, the annual Timperley Country Fair promises to be a fun event for all the family. There’ll be over 50 stalls to peruse along with a children’s play area, the Altrincham Dog Training Society, refreshments and live music by Loose Change. At the heart of the event is the popular Craft Show featuring such categories as ‘Decorate a Funny Veg’, ‘Design a Greeting Card’ and more. Why not pop along to see what it’s all about and to support the local community.
Timperley Country Fair & Craft Show, Larkhill, Thorley Lane, Timperley, Cheshire, WA15 7BJ. Open between 10am and 3.30pm.
2. Celebrate with the Waterside at the Big Family Birthday Party (Saturday September 13th)
The Waterside Arts Centre in Sale is 10 years old this year and is celebrating with a season of 10 very special events. The first of these is the Big Family Birthday Party on Saturday. Entry is FREE, and there’s an action-packed programme of events for the whole over the course of the day, most of which are free but some will incur a small charge.
Highlights include ‘Meet a real life mermaid’, children’s theatre, dance and drama taster sessions, face-painting, balloon modelling and more! Click here for full details.
Waterside Arts Centre, 1 Waterside Plaza, Sale, M33 7ZF. Open between 11am and 5pm.
3. Get on board for a weekend of “trainspotting”! (September 13-14)
Walton Park in Sale is located just a few minutes’ walk from Brooklands metro station. It’s a fun place to visit with the family as children can enjoy a ride on their miniature train track on Sundays for just a few pence.
This weekend, Sale Area Model Engineering Society will be running train rides across both Saturday and Sunday with lots of visiting trains along with fairground rides and refreshments. We can also recommend a stroll along the canal, which is just towards the back of the park, where the kids can feed the ducks and watch the passing boats.
A Weekend of Visiting Trains, Walton Park, Walton Rd, Sale, M33 4AG. Open between 11am and 5pm both days.
4. Enjoy a free day at Quarry Bank Mill (Saturday September 13th)
Quarry Bank, just down the road in Styal, will be opening its doors for FREE this Saturday as part of the Heritage Open Day weekend. A wonderful place for a family day out with so much to explore including the Cotton Mill and Apprentice House, which inspired the recent Channel 4 drama, The Mill.
The gardens are stunning and there are outdoor play areas for the children to enjoy. Storytellers will be spinning yarns about the mill’s past, and you can follow the clues to discover more on an energy trail.
Green Living at Quarry Bank Mill, Styal, Wilmslow, Cheshire SK9 4LA. Open 12pm to 4pm.
5. Join the Altrincham Children’s Choir (every Tuesday)
Altrincham Children’s Choir is a friendly, fun singing group for children aged 5 to 11. There is no audition and children can join at any time, and the choir is taught by professional singers, sisters Claire and Tina O’Brien, who are both experienced music teachers.
Rehearsals take place every Tuesday between 5.15pm and 6.15pm at The Hub in Altrincham, and the children sing lots of different music – pop to classical, indie to folk – as long as it’s fun. The choir perform at sporting events, festivals and major public events and have recorded for the radio and in the studio. Call Claire on 07779 668204 to book your FREE taster session or click here.
