Asda confirms closing date for Hale Barns store

We revealed in May that Waitrose will be taking over the unit.

Asda has confirmed it will close its Hale Barns store on Friday 31st July, paving the way for Waitrose to move in later this year.

The Hale Road store, which opened in May 2024 after Booths vacated the site, will shut its doors for the final time at the end of next month before undergoing a full refit.

A spokesperson for Asda said: "Like all major supermarkets, we regularly review our store estate to ensure it continues to meet customer needs and remains commercially sustainable.

"We'd like to thank our colleagues and the local community at our Hale Barns store and reassure customers they can continue to access Asda's great value and products at our nearby Altrincham and Wythenshawe superstores, or online at asda.com."

Waitrose has confirmed the new store will open in the autumn, with an exact date to be announced nearer the time.

The chain is investing a multimillion-pound sum in a full refit of the 15,000 sq ft unit at Hale Barns Square as part of a £1 billion nationwide investment programme.

Asda staff at the store will transfer across and become Waitrose Partners, with additional new roles also being created ahead of the opening.

We revealed in May that Waitrose would be taking over the site - ending an 18-year saga that began when the chain was first earmarked as anchor tenant for the Square development before pulling out in 2008.
