First look: à bloc, Stamford Park Road, Hale

The new opening is from the same team behind Stutter & Twitch, the coffee and vinyl records caravan that was a familiar sight in Stamford Square before moving on to Sale earlier this year.

Here's an exclusive first look inside à bloc, the new neighbourhood cafe opening opposite Stamford Park in Hale.

The new opening is from the same team behind Stutter & Twitch, the coffee and vinyl records caravan that was a familiar sight in Stamford Square before moving on to Sale earlier this year.

It is taking over the former Hale Coffeeworks unit on Stamford Park Road - but Hale Cycleworks is staying on the premises but moving to the basement.

And the cycling heritage of the corner space - which for decades was a bike shop called M & B Braithwaite - has been reflected in the name of the new venture, with à bloc a term that professional cyclists use when a rider is going all out to do their very best.

Lucy Holt, who with partner Ryan Hayes is launching the new cafe, told us what people could expect.

"It's a neighbourhood cafe with a focus on really good speciality coffee, and we're going to do freshly baked donuts every morning," she said.

"We're working with head chef Niamh Molloy, formerly of Pico's Tacos at the market, who has created a menu that is quite brunch-focused, but with a twist.

à bloc will be open six days a week from 8am to 9pm

"We're really excited about a vegetarian Colombian breakfast we're doing, but we'll also be baking fresh buns every day with bacon, sausage or egg as a grab and go.

"There will also be staples like freshly made fish finger sandwiches, a croque monsieur and croque madame, and we'll definitely be doing a Sunday roast soon."

à bloc will serve breakfast and lunch during the day before becoming more of a bar in the evening, with charcuterie boards and a full craft ale and cocktail menu.

Lucy said she and Ryan could "instantly see the potential" of the site when they first viewed it.

"It's a really beautiful spot and we found that a lot of our Stutter and Twitch customers live on the roads around here. I have a particular fondness for the area because I went to school at Stamford Park."

Lucy and Ryan have worked with local suppliers where possible, with coffee by long-time partners Blossom Coffee Roastery, bread by Most Bakery and the cocktail offering led by Holly Morton, formerly of Riddles. Plants are provided by Green & Grounded, uniforms supplied by Uskees, and ceramic plates have been individually designed in collaboration with Moss Studio Store.

à bloc will be opening officially at 8am on Friday 29th September, and will be open every day except Mondays, from 8am to 9pm.
